T-SQL Tuesday 150 – Two interviews at once

Reading Time: 2 minutes

For this months T-SQL Tuesday contribution I want to share how I ended up having two interviews at once.

This post includes fast cars, technology and campervans.

Kenneth Fisher hosts this months T-SQL Tuesday. Kenneth invites us to share details about our first technical job. I have a suspicion that Kenneth decided base the title of the invitation on something connected to his surname.

You can read the original invitation to decide for yourself. By clicking on this link for the T-SQL Tuesday 150 invitation or on the image below.

My first technical job

Anyway, I got my first technical job in my hometown in the UK just after I graduated. Back in the days of Windows *redacted*. Which I know sounds pretty standard.

However, my interview was very unusual. Because it is not the job I applied for. I had applied for a completely different job as a stop gap whilst I was deciding what to do.

However, the manager at the time had read my CV and had made some decisions of their own. When I arrived for my interview, I got a nice surprise. Due to the fact that I was told I was going to have two interviews at once. Which led to me accepting the technical job.

Back then I had no idea about the things I would end up doing along the way. Such as supporting databases for companies very high up in the Fortune 500 list and involved with Data Platform events. Including a SQL Server user group based in a church, the first ever SQL Saturday in the UK and DataWeekender.

Plus, coming up with solutions to help others in the Data Platform community. Like how to perform CI/CD for serverless SQL Pools.

It has been an interesting journey. From taking that first job in Crewkerne to living in the Netherlands and working for Sogeti. Who last year were awarded Microsoft partner of the year for the Netherlands.

On a side note, Crewkerne might sound familiar to those of you who like fast cars. Because it is the home of Ariel Motor Company Ltd. Who make the Ariel Atom. In fact, one of their designers use to be my neighbour.

Final words about two interviews at once

I hope reading this post about having two interviews at once has made some of you smile.

In addition, I want some of you to realise that a career can be a bit like a campervan journey. Because some interesting surprises can happen along the way.

Of course, if you have any questions or comments about this post feel free to reach out to me.
