In this post I want to take a break from covering technology and talk about my big appreciation for key workers. Because I truly believe they have gone above and beyond recently.
When I say key workers, I mean the essential workers who have been working hard whilst some of us have been in social isolation. Including those listed below in no particular order.
- Healthcare workers (in all sectors)
- Emergency services
- Supermarket staff
- Postal workers
- Lorry drivers
- And so many more
Of course, this is by no means a complete list. Because there are so many who have been willing to work whilst some of us have been at home. Potentially putting themselves at risk to make things easier for the rest of us.
All of these deserve our appreciation. I know in various countries initiatives have been put in place to show our appreciation from them. Including such things as clapping in the streets and providing tips to them.
In addition, some are saying they are the new heroes and I fully agree. Without them a lot of people would not get the care they need. In addition, a lot of us would not have been able to work from home as well as we have done.
I know it’s been on my mind a lot recently. Partially because I’ve depended on key workers more since working from home and also because my wife is one.
In fact, I relied on key workers in the UK whilst organizing the DataWeekender conference.
Because whilst organizing it a family member in the UK was taken ill and I could not travel from the Netherlands to the UK. So, I am very grateful to all the key workers who looked after them.
As far as my wife is concerned, I mentioned in a previous post here that she’s been going out to work during social isolation here in the Netherlands.
In addition, she’s had to deal with various things relating to the current situation as well as a cancelled holiday. With this in mind, I’ve spent a lot of time and effort sorting out a treat for her birthday.
However, like I said there’s so many other key workers out there who rightly deserve praise. I truly have praise for each and single one of them.
Final word about key workers
Anyway, this is just to show my big appreciation for key workers. You are all true heroes and I hope you all get the respect you deserve.
I know a lot of us in technology think we are heroes when we solve something technical, however these folks are heroes on another level.
Of course, you are more than welcome to leave a comment below about this. Especially if it’s an example of how key workers have helped you or your family.
[…] For example, I happen to know various members of the community have done things for charity. Others have supported keyworkers, like the ones I mentioned in a previous post here. […]
