First zero-slide session at Power BI Fest

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In this post I want to cover the fact that I did my first zero-slide session at Power BI Fest the other Saturday.

Because Power BI Fest is a Power BI event, I decided to do the session based on a one-paged Power BI report instead.

I know some people probably still see this as the same as using a slide. However, it was the first time I had presented a session using only Power BI. So, in my eyes it is a zero-slide session.

Because I only used one page, I thought I would keep the display as simple as possible. Which meant I had to avoid the urge to add other images like my MVP badge.

I decided to use a matrix visualization for both my Agenda and Online details based on two tables that I created in Power BI Desktop.

In addition, I also decided to add a second column to my Bio table. That way I was able to order my table by the second column instead of alphabetically.

It made viewing my Online table easier. Because I only had to expand my details whilst covering them, as you can see below.

After going through these details, I then did the demo for my session in Power BI Desktop.

Posts relating to first session

For those interested I have published a couple of posts relating to my first zero-slide session at Power BI Fest.

First post is about using Azure DevOps Analytics Views and Power BI to create Sprint review dashboards. Second post covers how you can create one Power BI report for both Azure Boards and GitHub data.

Second zero-slide session

One thing that might surprise some of you is that five minutes after finishing my first zero-slide session I presented another session at Power BI Fest. Which again was technically a zero-slide session. Because I presented it in another Power BI report with multiple pages.

In that session I shared some practical Microsoft certification tips. Based on my years of experience gaining them.

This was another new session for me, and I am glad I did it. What made this session special for me is the fact that recently I have shared my tips with a couple of people I know and both of them passed their exams.

It felt different presenting with multiple pages. I will be honest, this way felt more like presenting using slides. Still, it was an interesting experience.

Final words about first zero-slide session experience

I hope me sharing about my first zero-slide session at Power BI Fest has encouraged some of you to experiment. Because I found it refreshing to use a different medium to present a session and it made sense to use Power BI at a Power BI event.

I am considering presenting using Power BI again in the future and it is an option others might want to consider.

Of course, if you have any questions or comments about this post feel free to leave a comment.
